Say the word ‘telematics’ and most people picture a delivery van tracked on a dispatcher’s screen, or a company car with a blinking dot on a map, maybe a long-haul truck if they work in logistics. Ask them to picture that same technology running on an excavator, a generator, or a pump set bolted to a concrete pad on a construction site, and the picture gets considerably blurrier.
Off-road equipment rarely enters most people’s mental image of telematics, and static equipment, anything that never moves under its own power, almost never does at all, unless the person answering happens to work in the exact corner of the industry where that gap matters.
An industry most people never see
“The telematics industry touches so many lives without people realizing it. Chances are that every object you use today has been touched by a machine on which telematics has been installed”, explained Sander De Groote, GemOne’s Onyx Product Manager, in a recent conversation. Perhaps that invisibility runs deepest at the edges of the equipment world, where (rental) pumps and power generators sit.
A rental company running equipment from six manufacturers usually has six different places to look for the same basic question: where is this machine, and what is it telling us.
